Description

A maudifi Stage 2 upgrade service for the X-10D “The Missing Link” from the Musical Fidelity X-line of products.  The aim of Musical Fidelity’s X-10D vacuum tube, or valve, buffer was to present a consistent high-impedance load to the source component while delivering a low output impedance to the amplifier.  Regardless, the main outcome of the unit is to introduce some warmth and colour into otherwise sterile sounding equipment.

It was a successful product, but nevertheless limited in its ability by the basic internal components chosen in order to keep costs low and adhere to company / brand beliefs.  Over the years there have been aftermarket upgrades available for it.  This upgrade is similar to those, but goes further in terms of sonic improvements with greater emphasis on natural presentation of musical instruments.  This is achieved by use of true audio-grade components at critical locations and additional tweaking.

The result is more musical and realistic playback with greater focus and improved soundstage, a blacker background and improved dynamics.  Not just in comparison to the original stock X-10D, but also its X-Tube modern replacement and previously available upgrades.

  • Rectifier diodes replaced with Ultrafast recovery types
  • Noise snubbers added
  • Voltage doubler capacitors upgraded with Low ESR types
  • Filter / Reservoir capacitors upgraded with audio-grade types and capacity doubled.
  • Valve heater power supply filter capacitors upgraded with long-life types.
  • Non-inductive lower noise current limit resistor fitted.
• Main Buffer circuit
  • Feedback capacitors upgraded from basic electrolytic types to audio-grade bipolar types.
  • Input, intermediate and output coupling capacitors upgraded with true audio-grade polypropylene film types.

  • Stage 2+/3: Custom modifications to suit your listening preferences.
  • Audio-grade AC power supply
